Early life

Shergill was born in a Jatt Sikh family in Gorakhpur, India and studied there till fifth grade in St. Paul's School. Then, his family shifted to Patiala (Punjab). He studied at Yadavindra Public School (YPS), Patiala, and completed his graduation from Government Bikram College of Commerce, Patiala.

Film career

He started his career with Maachis, a movie based on terrorism in North India. The film was critically acclaimed and did reasonably well at the box office. Jimmy has since worked in many films, but only few have been successful. He starred in My Name is Khan alongside Shahrukh Khan and Kajol.

Shergill has performed a variety of roles in films such as Munna Bhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munnabhai, Delhi Heights and A Wednesday. He has been a critically acclaimed performer ever since his entry into Bollywood. His role in Mohabbatein was well appreciated. He went on to act in Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai and Tanu Weds Manu.

One of his best performances was in the movie Yahaan where he plays the role of an army officer who falls in love with a young Kashmiri woman in the strife-torn valley of Kashmir and Haasil where he plays the role of a college student who gets roped into the infamous student politics of Allahabad University.

Stardom in Punjabi cinema industry

Shergill makes his contribution to develop the Punjabi cinema by doing at least one Punjabi film every year. He is the first Punjabi actor who has made a commitment to the Punjabi cinema to help compete with the big-budget Hindi films. Dharti was his 2011 Punjabi film and was an all-time blockbuster. The film made more than the Hindi films that released on the same day even though it had very few screens/shows. The success cemented Jimmy Shergill as the new Punjabi hero. Almost all of his Punjabi films have been successful.

He has acted in a number of Punjabi movies such as Mannat, Yaaran Naal Baharan, Tera Mera Ki Rishta, Munde U.K. De and Mel Karade Rabba. His Punjabi films have done really well in Punjab as well as overseas.

He started his own production house by producing and acting in the Punjabi bilingual Dharti. This movie had the same team that produced earlier movies like Mel Kara De Rabba, Tere Mera Ki Rishta joining hands with notable director Navneaat Singh. Japjit Khaira will be added to the group. The movie opened to block-buster opening and is running full-house, gaining profits across the globe.

Personal life

Shergill is married to Priyanka Puri from Delhi and they have a son named Veer Shergill.
